Clutch hitting led to three come-from-behind home wins on the weekend as VPCC earned a Region 10 series sweep. In the process, the Gators (5-14, 4-2) extended their winning streak to four.
Things got started March 8 with a pair of wins over Rockingham Community College (Wentworth, N.C.). After falling behind 3-2 in the opener, the Gators erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh for an 11-3 victory. Marco Fernandez (Spanish River HS/Florida) had a two-run single in each of the big innings. Aidan Feather (Grassfield/Chesapeake) added three hits, two of them doubles, and an RBI, and Bryce Hickman (Countryside HS/Florida) was 2 for 2 with two runs batted in. Zack Easton (Hermitage/Richmond) also added a pair of hits. On the mound, Logan Contreraz (Deep Creek/Chesapeake) earned the win, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and no runs.
In the day's second game, Israel Dozier (Kempsville/Virginia Beach) doubled in the bottom of the seventh, his third hit of the game, gave the Gators the 3-2 victory. Austin Smith (Creekside HS/Georgia) started the winning rally with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kaden Hunley (Middlesex) threw a complete game for the Gators, holding the Eagles to three hits and no earned runs.
The Gators completed the series sweep the following day with a 6-2 victory. A three-run seventh inning iced it. Feather had two hits, including another double, and four RBI, and Cameron Johnson (Nansemond River/Suffolk) also had two hits. Easton pitched the first five innings, scattering seven hits and two earned runs for the victory. Relievers Logan Landers (Menchville/Newport News), Cody Myers (Liberty/Richmond) and Wilson Estep (Walsingham Academy/Williamsburg) held the visitors to no hits and no runs the final four innings, with Estep earning the save.
The Gators have a three-game series against Paul D. Camp Community College this weekend, with a March 15 doubleheader on the road and a single game March 16 (noon start) at War Memorial in Hampton.
