The Virginia Peninsula Community College baseball team upset Paul D. Camp, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday, April 21, at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.
Pitcher Kaden Hunley kept Camp in check, giving up just three hits and striking out four for the complete-game victory. Hunley retired 17 of the final 19 batters, getting the side in order in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings.
The Gators fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first when the visitors scored an unearned run. VPCC tied it with Israel Dozier's RBI single in the bottom half and took the lead on a groundout by Jayden Alvarez in the second inning. Dozier had two of the Gators' five hits.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Camp scored two runs in the second and two in the fourth for a 4-1 victory. Alvarez had two hits and drove in both runs for VPCC. He also pitched eight innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs.
Sunday's game scheduled for Sunday at Camp was rained out and won't be rescheduled.
This week, the Gators finish the regular season with four games: April 25 vs. The Apprentice School at War Memorial Stadium and a three-game series at Surry Community College in Dobson, N.C. (a doubleheader April 26 and a single game April 27.) Surry is ranked ninth in the country.
